Course Introduction
In recent years there has been a growing attention to the role of social safety nets in low income countries. In many low income countries, interest in social safety nets has been driven by the success of flagship programmes in some middle income countries such as Brazil and Mexico.
Social safety nets projects are critical to reducing poverty because they support inclusive growth and provide resources to the most vulnerable in the society. Although the World Bank traditionally viewed Social Safety Nets (SSNs) as mechanisms for redistributing income and improving the welfare of those unable to participate in productive activities, SSNs are now also seen as critical for economic growth and transitioning agenda. The need for SSNs is a critical concern for governments across the globe.
Which SSN programmes to choose, how best to structure and deliver them, and how to make them fiscally and economically sustainable in the long term have been the concerns of development partners, government at all levels and other stakeholders. This is because the answers to these questions will determine the well-being of millions of poor and vulnerable people around the world.
