Course Introduction
Our Governance and Leadership Management Programme answers the question that has stumped the experts for centuries; why are some nations rich and others poor, divided by wealth and poverty, health and sickness, food and famine? Many have attributed these, to factors such as culture, weather, geography and destiny. However, here we will be discussing the role of proper governance and leadership in effecting change and the role each individual needs to play.
The most important role of public sector leaders has been to solve the problems and challenges faced in a specific environment. When we say we want more leaders in public sector, what we are really looking for are people who will promote institutional adaptations in the public interest. Leadership in this sense is not value neutral. It is a positive espousal of the need to promote certain fundamental values that can be called Public Spiritedness. Many countries look forward to strengthening leadership and governance structures as a panacea to the challenges of the people. The lack of effective leadership and governance in virtually all sectors has remained a major challenge in most low-to middle-income countries, including Nigeria, and this has contributed in no small measure to the defeat of developmental goals.
In light of these, a capacity training programme becomes expedient to acquaint the participants with the trends in governance and leadership development so as to meet the demands of time. There is no single model to governance and leadership, despite the diversity of strategies and approaches, some general and common trends can be drawn.
