Course Introduction
In an era when accountability and value for money have become the panacea to development efforts, the efficient and effective management of funds in such a manner to accomplish the objectives of a specified project or organisation is always the desire of all stakeholders. Strategic financial management is one of the most critical and important activities for any organisations. It is a fact that the consequences of all important management decisions, financial and otherwise, are immediately and/or eventually will be reflected in not just the financial performance of the organisation but on the overall success or otherwise of the organisation/project. At the same time, most stakeholders have relatively little professional exposure to, and training in, strategic financial management.
The quest for value for money in government activities has brought financial management to the fore of development management. Within the realm of Development Management, financial management provides all stakeholders of development a better means of learning from past experience, particularly as it relates to improving service delivery as well as planning and allocation of resources. The primary reasons often mentioned for the proliferation of uncompleted projects include unnecessary delays in project completion and cost overrun.
Strengthening the financial processes is an important means of realising the project’s objectives, especially through promoting effective delivery of government services as well as ensuring accountability and transparency in public administration. The aim of this training is to provide participants with the practical skills and fundamental knowledge for effective and efficient financial management.
